Women using '#curvee' in protest of Instagram's hashtag ban

The company defended its decision by stating the hashtag was being used to share images and videos which violated the company’s guidelines

Instagram has sparked an online protest after banning the hashtag "#curvy."

Users of the social app have responded by claiming other similar-sounding hashtags in an act of defiance to the ban, with many women using the hashtag “#curvee” as a substitute.

The company defended its decision by stating that the ban was implemented due to the hashtag being used to share images and videos which violated the company’s community guidelines surrounding nudity.

However the decision has provoked anger as other more explicit and provocative hashtags are currently still searchable.

Women have since been posting photos celebrating their body shapes and tagging the pictures with the replacement hashtags such as "curvee" and "bring curvy back."
