Baby, its cold outside! How to style your winter fur fashion
Fur is not the privilege of the rich and famous any more, it’s been democratized
On a furry note…
It’s a rainy day in Dubai and I spent all morning debating whether I put on my fur or not, and…I did. I will not miss the opportunity to enjoy the warmth and vibrant color of my new faux-fur stole. On the other hand air conditioning is still on full blast in most places, giving fur a legitimate role in this case!
In recent years, we witnessed the comeback of fur on runways and streets. Designers courageously included fur and faux-fur in their collections. Forgotten the time when the thinnest fur band would cause vicious and aggressive reactions against any designer who would dare including it in fashion show.
Fur has been demonized to such an extent by animal-rights campaigners that wearing the real thing is likely to earn you a few severe looks at best, and public rants by strangers at worst.
In 1994 five supermodels took off their clothes, sat on the floor and told the world: ‘We’d rather go naked than wear fur.’ Since then, all but one of the five models (Christy Turlington) has failed to keep their word. Naomi Campbell, for example, posed in a £120,000 Russian sable coat in 2009, and Cindy Crawford promoted mink coats in 2004.
In 1996, when an activist tossed a dead raccoon on Anna Wintour’s lunch plate at the Four Seasons, it seemed fur may going the way of the whalebone corset. But over two decades later, 73 percent of this year’s 436 shows in New York, Paris, Milan and London featured fur, according to Saga Furs, the Finnish auction house. And real-fur sales have increased globally by 58 per cent since the end of the Nineties, says the British Fur Trade Association. The battle between the anti and pro-fur lobbies is still being fought vehemently, but I have to say, faux-fur have reached such a level of perfection in its production, texture, color and feel that it would be a shame not to invest in a stole, the must-have fur item for this season.
Fur is not the privilege of the rich and famous any more, it’s been democratized and it goes perfectly with denim and sneakers.
In 1953, Marilyn Monroe wore a white mink coat and a platina fox stole in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Liz Taylor sported a mink over her slip in 1960 movie Butterfield 8. And women would dream of wearing such lavish clothing.
In 2016 women wear stylishly their furry jackets with a lot more laid-back attitude.
A distressed denim and booties are a faux-fur vest and jacket best friends.
A stole is to be worn cross body, cinched with a thin belt over cropped skinny pants or a pencil skirt.
If you have a bohemian style then a vest over a floral dress with boots will add warmth to your whimsical look.
On the other hand if you prefer a classical approach to fashion, then a mid-length jacket over midi dress is your best option.
For the bolder ones, a wide legged denim teamed with a silky secretary blouse and a furry vest will guaranty sartorial success.
If you’re not a shy person then a wide brim hat is a great accessory to your furry item. And if you are, I suggest to go step by step, by incorporating touches of fur to your look: shoes with fur details, a furry clutch, a belt or a scarf. I highly recommend to choose them in fun bright colors to make a difference.
Fur can add volume to your silhouette. Fortunately stores offer a big variety of texture, thickness and cuts. Pick short and sleeveless (or tight sleeves), even cropped one, if you’re petite and layer it with longer cardigan or top.
If you do not want to invest in a full fur or faux-fur item, you can always find jackets and coats with detachable fur collar, which allows you to use the item in two different ways.
Price is not a barrier to wearing fur anymore; with the faux-fur varieties in stores you can find the right one for all budgets.
Nevertheless there’s a Fendi fur coat worth a €1 million, as reported by the Financial Times, possibly making it the most expensive coat ever retailed.
At this point I leave it up to your values, principles and bank account…
