Just like food and fashion, selfies endure trends. First there was the duck face, then came the bathroom selfie, shortly followed by the no make-up selfie and the gym selfie.

Whether you get a kick from turning the lens on yourself or not, digital self portraits are now a permanent fixture on the pop culture merry go-round.

Having officially been added into the Oxford Dictionary in 2013, the 'selfie' is far from dead. But the latest craze has us literally scratching our heads.

Earlier this year, everyone from Gigi Hadid to Kylie Jenner were suddenly uploading photos featuring one hand casually resting on their faces. Better known as the claw-hand or T-Rex hand, it's ruining selfies everywhere.

Dubai-based beauty blogger Huda Beauty claims to have ignited the movement with a tutorial she posted back in March this year. “It'll make any selfie look better,” she says. But she forgot to mention it can also look painfully awkward. At first, every indication pointed to the T-Rex hand selfie as being a short-lived trend. Something you'd laugh back at years later, like dropping your phone in the toilet (perhaps while trying said selfie).

But social media is still lapping it up, there are currently 2,459 posts featuring the #trexhand hashtag on Instagram and celebs are not letting go. Sure, the Kardashians may have it nailed. But as with many trends, it doesn't always translate to the real world. If the last few months has taught us anything, it's that you should follow these guidelines to ensure yours is more sexy than silly.

DO... Wear your nails sharp and long, the more brightly coloured and claw-esque the better. Short nails might be the signature of cool girls everywhere, but when it comes to the T-Rex hand selfie, they'll only make you look like a timid squirrel. The very opposite of fierce.

DO... Make your best features stand out. Brighten your lips or place your hands near your eyes to draw attention to them. When positioning your fingers, make it look like you're effortlessly grabbing for a can of coke in the fridge, while also delicately moving your hair out of your face.

DO... Wear as much bling as you can fit on one hand. The purpose of the T-Rex hand selfie is to show off your cutting edge nail colour, as well as your collection of diamonds and worldly treasures. Pair it with a smug expression and you're all set.

DON'T… Whatever you do, never go full T-Rex. This is real life, not Jurassic Park. Keep your facial expressions subtle, so as to avoid over-dramatising the selfie. The same goes for the positioning of your fingers. They aim is to look elegant and feminine. You want to give the illusion that you're dangerous without actually being that.

DON'T... Try and cram too many trends into one selfie. If you're doing duck face, steer clear of the T-Rex hand and vice versa. Just as with what you wear, crowding a selfie with two many trends can backfire and the shot can easily end up looking staged or silly.

DON'T... Just flop your arm in any old spot and call it a done day. Make sure the position of your arms feels natural. If it doesn't feel right, then it probably doesn't look right. Also, the T-Rex is less about the arms and more about the claws or fingers, so do your best to turn your hand to face the camera so we can get a good look of your fierce nail color.

NOTE: All advice offered is done so with a tongue planted firmly in cheek. Now go forth and selfie.
