Google says Robin Williams’ suicide seared into the world's collective mindset more than anything else this year while in the “what is” category, the search “what is Ebola” came out on top, with queries on ALS and love rounding out the top three.
The reaction to Williams' August death topped Google's list of 2014's fastest-rising search requests released Tuesday.
It topped notable events such as the World Cup, the Ebola outbreak, the March disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and the Ice Bucket Challenge, an Internet video craze to raise awareness and money for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.
In the “how to” category, the search “how to draw” came out on top, with “how to kiss” and “how to crochet.”
Meanwhile, in the “where is” category, Ecuador, Uruguay and Sochi figured in the top three of apparently unknown locations.
Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence and Katy Perry were the most searched female celebrities on Google and Ed Sheeran, Jay Z and Harry Styles were the most searched male celebrities.
Popular recipes searches include chocolate cake, lemon drizzle cake and banana cake.
