A tweet from an Israeli army spokesperson honoring a late Egyptian actress has sparked anger online.

Israeli army’s Arabic Spokesman Avichay Adraee paid tribute on social media to Karima Mokhtar, the acclaimed Egyptian actress who died on Thursday.

“May God have mercy on your soul, mama Nona, goodbye Karima Mokhtar,” he wrote.

He said that he used to watch her movies on the First Israeli channel during weekends, recalling that she used to symbolize the “strong, affectionate and successful Egyptian mother who protects her children”.

“Glory be to the one who has eternity; indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to him we will return. May she rest in peace”, he added.

Egyptian activists on Twitter responded sarcastically to Adraee’s tweets, highlighting Israel’s stances against Palestinians.

Many asked how an Israeli army spokesman can show compassion for the death of an Arab and Egyptian artist while “not have any mercy or pity towards victims being killed by Israel on a daily basis?” one user wrote on Twitter.
