Heartbreaking photo of Syrian father holding daughter’s body before funeral

A photo of a Syrian father kissing the body of his daughter before her funeral near Damascus is being shared after air strikes hit the family’s town over the weekend.

Last Friday, at least three civilians, including two children, were killed in air strikes on the town of Arbin, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The bloodshed came a day after the latest suspected chlorine attack by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad on Ghouta, which has been besieged by government forces since 2013.

The photograph, captured by freelance Syrian photojournalist Amer al-Mohibany, was published by the AFP news agency and identified the girl as six-year-old Aya.

Aya’s mother screamed “let me take her with me , she isn't dead you are falsehood... look to her and see how much is a beautiful she is just sleeping,” according to al-Mohibany.

Her funeral was held in Zamalka, near Syria's capital Damascus on Monday.
