Thousands take to social media to support Saudi Crown Prince’s abaya statements
Social media went abuzz following Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s statement during his interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes saying that women should be free to choose their interpretation of decent attire, and that this should not be limited to the black abaya.
Tens of thousands of people used hashtags on Twitter to express their views, mostly supporting the crown prince’s statements.
Supporters of the statements used the hashtag ‘how I survived the awakening’ while the opposing side used the hashtag ‘abaya is sharia you secularist’. Those using the latter hashtag believe that women should not be free to wear what they want, whereas others replied saying that there is no real law that forces a woman to wear the black abaya.
With the ascent to power of the young royal, the kingdom has seen an expansion in women’s rights including a decision to allow women to attend mixed public sporting events and the right to drive cars starting from this summer.
