This is the shocking image captured by UAE daily, The National of a nine-month old baby lying in a coma with bruises on her face, internal bleeding and a fractured skull. Tubes lead to her mouth to help with her breathing and food, as she lies in the Al Qassimi Hospital bed.

Neurological surgeon and senior consultant, Dr Satish Krishnan, described the Salama Al Mazmi’s condition as ‘dire’, the report added.

“Emergency teams resuscitated her and once she started to breathe and was stabilized, a CT scan was carried out and found a blood clot in her brain, from an old injury… The scan revealed a skull fracture and broken rib from a previous injury.” Dr. Krishnan said, adding that she then underwent surgery to stabilize her condition.

The baby has pre-existing health conditions impacting her immune system which her parents initially thought were the cause of the emergency.

“We thought it was something related to her illness, as she was born prematurely and was in an incubator for two months before she was discharged," the baby’s father, a serviceman with the UAE armed forces, told The National. a serviceman with the Armed Forces.

He said Sharjah police were called when doctors discovered the extent of Salama’s injuries. He said he, and his wife were both questioned.

The family’s two Indonesian maids were also questioned by police. Investigations continue – the report added, and no one has yet been charged.
