An Istanbul court on Friday ordered the release of seven suspects in the controversial trial of staff from the Cumhuriyet opposition newspaper but said other prominent defendants should be kept in jail.

The seven, including cartoonist Musa Kart, will be released under judicial supervision, meaning they have to report to the authorities regularly ahead of the next hearing on September 11.

However, the judge ordered that four other suspects should remain in custody.

Those to remain in custody are the most prominent defendants in the case -- commentator Kadri Gursel, investigative journalist Ahmet Sik, the paper’s editor-in-chief Murat Sabuncu and chief executive Akin Atalay.

Most of the suspects held in the case have already been in prison for more than eight months. If convicted, they face varying terms of up to 43 years in jail.
