Global media reacts positively to Saudi crown prince’s pledge for moderate Islam
News sites around the world have praised Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s promise of Saudi Arabia’s return to ‘moderate Islam’ on Tuesday.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pledged a "moderate, open" Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, breaking with ultra-conservative clerics in favor of an image catering to foreign investors and Saudi youth.
“We are returning to what we were before -- a country of moderate Islam that is open to all religions and to the world,” he said at an economic forum in Riyadh.
“The 32-year-old is the driving force behind ‘Vision 2030’, Saudi Arabia's long term economic and social policy designed to wean itself off dependence on oil, and is popular for his reforms to the country’s ineffective state bureaucracy,” The Independent wrote.
““We are returning to what we were before – a country of moderate Islam that is open to all religions and to the world,” he said at an economic forum in Riyadh, as quoted by AFP. “We will not spend the next 30 years of our lives dealing with destructive ideas. We will destroy them today,” he added. “We will end extremism very soon,”” RT wrote.
“In recent months, Saudi Arabia has organized concerts, a Comic-Con pop culture festival and a mixed-gender national day celebration that saw people dancing in the streets to thumping electronic music for the first time,” The Daily Mail wrote.
“The 32-year-old is seen as the face of the modern kingdom and is the driving force behind its long term economic plan to wean itself off dependence on oil by 2030,” The Mirror wrote.
