On February, 74 football fans were killed in an incident that erupted after a premier league match between the popular Ahly and Masry teams at Egypt’s Port Said Stadium.

The country’s Prime Minister, Hesham Qandil, has told Sports Minister Al-Emary Farouq that the Cabinet’s and presidency’s approval is essential for starting the new football season due to the sensitive nature of the issue.

News reports quoted head of Egypt’s Football Federation, Mahmoud al-Shamy, early Sunday, saying that the new season might be postponed until the 31st October, a statement he later denied.

Farouq said several competing clubs had contacted him about resuming the competitions, the losses which come as a result of the halt are negatively affecting these teams, reported the newspaper.

Despite the pressure to begin the football league, Ahly team fans have protested several times; objecting the resumption of the league before suspects involved in the massacre have been brought to justice.
