Fan commits suicide after UAEs win against Iraq in Gulf Cup: source

A diehard Iraqi fan has committed suicide after his country’s national team defeat by the United Arab Emirates in a heated final Gulf Cup match held in Bahrain on Friday, a police source said.

The police officer, who kept his name anonymous, told Iraq-based Al Sumaria News website on Saturday that the fan named Ayad Atalah,24, from the western province of Anbar, was found dead in his room after hanging himself.

“Security forces have transferred his body to the forensics and a case investigating his death has opened,” the source added.

The UAE won against the former Asian champion Iraq (2-1) in extra-time to claim their second Gulf Cup title.

The second goal was scored by the substitute, Ismail Al-Hammadi, in the 107th minute.

The tournament, which was shifted from Iraq to Bahrain for safety reasons, was held without incidents despite daily anti-government protests on the island nation.
