Kuwaiti soccer tournament receives visit from ex-Juventis player Del Piero

Italian soccer legend Alessandro Del Piero visited Kuwait to attend the 34th annual Abdullah Al-Roudan Indoor Football Championship held at the Martyr Fahad Al-Ahmad Hall in Daeya, one of the most popular soccer tournaments in Kuwait.

The championship is held daily during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

This year’s tournament was sponsored by Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for the first time.

The indoor tournament brings together top footballers from all around the world. At this year’s event more than 70 players representing 15 nations will take part in the tournament.

Del Piero is one of the most notable global football superstars to attend the event. The auditorium filled up three hours prior to the star’s arrival.

Upon his arrival, Del Piero was welcomed with overwhelming cheers and joyful screams. Fans of all ages were calling out his name.

Del Piero addressed the audience in Arabic saying “Shukran.. Ramadan Kareem.” (Thank you, happy Ramadan)

He commented on the enthusiasm he felt from the Kuwaiti audience and how the excitement reminded him of fans in Italy, saying “soccer unites everyone”.

The former Juventis player was gifted a traditional Arabic cloak, or Bisht, as crowds cheered.

Del Piero is currently playing with Sydney FC in Australia after a successful career with Juventis as well as scooping the Fifa world cup with Italy in 2006.
