English football team Manchester United has sent its striker Wayne Rooney for some warm weather training in Egypt, the Egyptian daily news website al-Ahram reported on Friday.

Rooney, who was sent away to Egypt’s Red Sea resort in Sharm el-Sheikh, is expected to undergo fitness training in the city to recover from a recurrent groin injury.

“Wayne has been sent away on a sort of hot weather break. His groin has not recovered yet.” Manchester United manager David Moyes said during a press conference.

“We’ve sent a fitness coach with him and he is away with his family. So we’ve given him a bit of a break. I always hoped I would be able to do that at some point in the season, but his groin is not as good as we hoped at this point,” Moyes added.

Manchester United is ranked at number seven in the English Premier League. The team hopes to have Rooney return before their clash with Chelsea on Jan. 19.

“Hopefully we will get him back for the Chelsea game and we will see how he is then,” Moyes said.

The 28-year-old England player is the team's top scorer this season, with a total of 11 goals.
