Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo denied insulting his counterpart Lionel Messi, saying that he has nothing but respect for his rival.

“This is absolutely false and I have assured my lawyer takes action to sue those responsible,” the Portuguese wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

“I have the utmost respect for all my professional colleagues, and Messi is obviously no exception,” he added.

Ronaldo’s claims came following media reports that he had insulted Messi behind closed doors.

Ronaldo and Messi have been engaged in a battle on the pitch to become the best player in the world.

Ronaldo broke Messi's four-year stranglehold on the FIFA Ballon d'Or when he was voted 2013 World Player of the Year.
