Egypt’s 1st female football referee hits the pitches

Samir’s entry generated positive reactions on social media with many users applauding the move

Egyptian football welcomed this week its first female referee, defying social taboos in the country, Egypt’s al Masry al Youm newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Sarah Samir was refereeing the third division match that opposed Wadi Degla FC and Talaea El Gaish SC.

Talking to the private Egyptian TV channel CBC, Samir, said she was happy with the public’s reactions.

Samir’s entry generated positive reactions on social media with many users applauding the move.

@NguZsc, tweeting in Arabic, wrote: “Sarah Samir is a great thing for our country [Egypt]. We are moving forward.”

“Honestly she is fit and beautiful ... Why aren’t all Egyptian referees like her?” @Ahmednhad tweeted in Arabic.
