Saudi, Iraq World Cup qualifier to be played in kingdom

Published: Updated:

The Asian Football Confederation has announced that the Saudi Arabia, Iraq 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier will be played in the kingdom.

The AFC decision complies with an International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) verdict, which recently acknowledged the Kingdom’s merit to host the football match.

Earlier, the Iraqi football team had refused to play a match in Riyadh in response to Saudi Arabia refusing to play in Baghdad. But the increasing unrest in Iraq has led its national team into a situation where it is now forced to play all home games abroad.

The two teams will face each other in the “Luminous Jewel” Stadium at King Abdullah Sports City on March 28.
