Cheshire police say Wayne Rooney has been charged with drunk driving.

The 31-year-old Everton striker was reportedly stopped by police near him home outside Manchester early Friday. He has been released on bail and is due to appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court on Sept. 18.

Rooney has been charged with driving while over the prescribed alcohol limit after he was arrested at 0200 local time (0100 GMT) on Friday in Wilmslow.

Rooney is the all-time leading scorer for England’s national soccer team and for Manchester United. He retired from the national team last month.

He rejoined Everton, his first club, this season after 13 years at Old Trafford.
