While many have pegged England and France as favorites to win Euro 2024, former England and Manchester United star Paul Parker has said that Germany and Portugal should not be underestimated.

The former footballer joined Al Arabiya English’s Riz Khan to preview and predict outcomes for the tournament which kicks off in Germany on Friday, featuring Europe’s top national football teams.

“I don’t believe you can rule out Portugal or Germany. Germany, because they’re the host and… you never write off Germans,” Parker said.

Germany has won the tournament three times and will look to leverage its home advantage to add another title to its history.

Parker added that Portugal, with its array of quality players including Cristiano Ronaldo, also poses a significant threat.

According to Parker, the Euros is the most challenging tournament to win.

“I would say the Euros, even from my time playing international football, is still the hardest tournament to win because most of the better nations are coming from Europe.”

He said that many fans in Britain are eagerly anticipating Euro 2024, which he described as “a different brand of football, a different style.”

Parker added that “England should at least make the semifinals.”

The tournament, featuring 24 national teams from across Europe, will conclude with the final match on July 14, 2024.

The teams are divided into six groups of four. Each team will play three matches in the group stage, with the top two teams from each group and the four best third-placed teams advancing to the knockout stages.

Matches will be played in 10 cities across Germany, including Berlin, Munich, Dortmund, and Frankfurt. The final will take place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

The reigning champion is Italy, who won Euro 2020 by defeating England in the final at London’s Wembley Stadium.
