Saudi man plays dress up: Hollywood stars as Arabs

Actors Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Johnny Depp and George Clooney were seen dressed up in Thawbs with Ghutras on their heads

Social media was abuzz this week with images of Hollywood hunks like Brad Pitt and George Clooney donning traditional Gulf wear.

Saudi native and Photoshop master Abdullah al-Harithy decided to put his original works on display online, showcasing Hollywood stars dressed up in the customary garb of those in the Arab Gulf.

The young Saudi used the photo editing software to portray actors Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Johnny Depp, Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy and George Clooney wearing the traditional Saudi Thawb—a white loose garment with long sleeves – and the Ghutra, the commonly square shaped cotton fabric worn on the head.

While singers such as Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj appeared in the Arabic long-black robe Abaya, famous TV host Oprah Winfrey was dressed up in a traditional Arabic blue garment and a headscarf.

In an interview with Al Arabiya Channel’s Morning Show, al-Harithy said the whole concept began as an unrealistic idea inside his mind, but garnered him widespread attention after sharing the images.

“One picture can take up to two hours of consistent focusing to get the desired character,” he said.

In other picture collages, al-Harithy showed Barcelona’s football star Lionel Messi wearing a customary Emirati Thawb, while Real Madrid’s icon Cristiano Ronaldo was depicted as fixing his Ghutra.

Celebrities were not the only ones to get the makeover treatment. Politicians as well were the subject of Harithy's masterpieces.

U.S. President Barack Obama and former U.S. Secretary Hillary Clinton were also given Arab-esque looks.
