The death of a baby boy found in his teen mother’s shopping bag at the Herald Square last year has been ruled a homicide, according to the New York Daily News (NYDN).

The ruling earlier this week came nearly six months after the baby was discovered in his mother’s bag.

The mother, who was 17-years-old when the incident happened, was caught shoplifting jeans at a Victoria's Secret store along with a friend.

Police discovered the baby after a strong odor was detected coming from bag, NBC New York reported.

Results of the investigation suggested that the infant died as a result of homicidal asphyxia, a spokeswoman from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Tuesday, in statements carried by NYDN.

A medical examiner spokesperson said the child was alive for less than one day.

The teen mother told police she was about six months pregnant and had miscarried the baby before the shop incident.
