Italian ‘granny’ becomes Internet football star

A video showing an elderly woman playing football with a group of youngsters in Italy has gone viral turning the mystery “granny” into an Internet celebrity after the video was shared thousands of times on Facebook, The Local news website reported Monday.

Dressed in a pencil skirt and a cardigan, the woman who has been dubbed “la nonnina” (the granny) by the Italian press, is seen skillfully passing, dribbling and kicking a soccer ball with children on a street in the Italian capital.

The video earned more than 5,000 views only hours after it was posted on Italy’s Leggo TV Facebook page, according to the Rome-based Il Messaggero newspaper, The Local reported.

Little is known about the woman’s real identity. Speculation is that the woman is from Rome, where the video was shot, according to local media.
