‘Mohammad' top name for men in Norway’s Oslo

This is the first time the name tops the men’s name list in Norway’s capital, the report says

The Muslim name Mohammad appears to be the most common name for men in Norway's capital Oslo.

According to Statistics Norway, this is the first time the name Mohammad top’s the men’s list of names in the Norwegian capital.

“It is very exciting,” said Jørgen Ouren of Statistics Norway, as quoted by The Local.

Some 4,801 males were found to be named Mohammad or variations of the name, according to the recent report.

The name came ahead of the names Jan (4,667) and Per (4,155), the report added.

The Local said Mohammad has topped the name list of newborns in Oslo for four consecutive years.

Reports estimate the Muslim community in Norway at 150,000. The majority of them originally come from Pakistan, Somalia, Iraq and Morocco.
