Dubai group hosts movie nights for domestic workers
Shukran Workers is geared toward making laborers and domestic workers in the city feel valued
A community group in Dubai has hosted a free Bollywood movie night for domestic workers with little time or money to spare, with plans to run a similar film experience for Filipino domestic workers already in motion.
Shukran Workers, founded by university graduates Mohit Bhojwani and Prakarti Lakhwani, is geared toward making laborers and domestic workers in the city feel valued.
“There are very few places we can go alone,” one domestic worker told 7DAYS newspaper. “Everything is quite expensive and also where can people like us go without being asked questions?”
A volunteer at the event, Dharam Veer Sood, spoke to 7DAYS about the importance of the event: “Think about it: even on a day off the maid sleeps in her office – your home. “How would you feel if you had to stay at the office all week and had nowhere to go even for a few hours on your day off?”
The group staged a similar event last month for male laborers.
One maid at the most recent event told volunteers of the joy she felt watching a Bollywood blockbuster, according to 7DAYS.
“In four years no one has made me feel so happy here like this. It feels nice to meet others and watch a Bollywood film after so long. I have not laughed so much in a long time,” she said.
