It may be fashionable, but your beard could be as dirty as a toilet
As facial hair grows ever more popular with the hipster trend reaching its peak, beard lovers should be warned
As facial hair grows ever more popular with the hipster trend reaching its peak, beard lovers should be warned that, according to a new study, their hairy jaws could be dirtier than a toilet.
An investigation by microbiologists in New Mexico, in conjunction with the local Action 7 News station, has found that some swabbed beards contained so much fecal matter they were comparable to toilets.
Microbiologist John Golobic, who works at Quest Diagnostics in New Mexico, said: “I’m usually not surprised, and I was surprised by this… There would be a degree of uncleanliness that would be somewhat disturbing.”
“Those are the types of things you’d find in (fecal matter),” Golobic added, noting that if there were similar samples in a water system, it would be closed down for disinfecting.
According to the microbiologist, hand washing and trying not to touch one’s beard is key
“Try to keep your hands away from your face, as much as possible,” he said.
New York Daily News reports that when asked for the sample size of the tests, Quest Diagnostics did not immediately give a response.
