Guests at a Turkish wedding showered a newlywed couple with 15 kilograms of gold, Turkish daily Haber Turk reported.

The gold was given as gifts to groom, Ferhad Ghonish, the son of a former Turkish politician and businessman, and his bride. It is worth an estimated $500,000 based on market rates.

According to tradition US dollar notes are usually given as wedding gifts in Turkey. But with the lira devaluation crisis, and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s appeal for the Turkish to renounce the US dollar, guests replaced dollars with gold.
