Saudi hospital conducts successful blood transfusion on rare Arabian horse

A team of veterinarians from King Faisal University has successfully administered a blood transfusion to a rare breed of an Arabian horse to raise its red blood cell count before undergoing a surgery.

According to Turki Shawaf, Associate professor Faculty of Veterinary Medicaine at King Faisal University, the horse was suffering from a tumor and hemorrhaging from her uterine organ, resulting in an acute drop of the horse’s red blood cell count.

“We decided to go ahead with an urgent equine blood transfusion, because of the complication associated with this procedure it is best saved for life threatening occasion. the process of equine blood transfusion entails high standards and skills to pick the right donor.”

“The average horse has about 40 liters of blood,” he added.

An equine blood transfusion is an emergency procedure that provides temporary but potential life-saving benefits until marrow cells take over to compensate the shortage of blood components.
