A 90-year-old man wearing a white turban appeared in media pictures pledging allegiance to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, at the Palace of Safa in Mecca, on Wednesday.
The picture was widely commented among Saudis.
In his conversation with Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the old man said: "We had allegiance to Abdulaziz and your eight uncles… We pledge allegiance to you and to God and I ask God the great, in the last 10 days of Ramadan to grant you a great and long life; and make us safe and sound with the help of God, then with you and the king of the Muslims.”
This old man was one of thousands who were gathered in the palace for allegiance, along with princes, ministers, religious scholars and all classes of Saudi society.
Several Saudis commented about the picture on social media.
“This old man lived in times of war and division and tasted bitterness, so he appreciates the grace of security,” one of the Saudis commented on the picture.
While another one tweeted that, this old man during his long life has pledged many kings of Saudi Arabia in the previous years since King Abdul Aziz and the rule passed on between his sons smoothly and easily without any changes to the people in Saudi society, being a tight and well-known system.
