Onions are forever? Here’s why Iranians are using the veggie in their jewelry

There is no doubt that the sky rocketing prices of onions in Iran is literally brought tears to the eyes of its citizens over the last few weeks.

The price per kilogram for onions now costs Iranian toman 3,500 which is equivalent to US dollars 0.1, up from previously toman 400 which is about US dollars 0.01. In local terms, it is still a steep rise that is taking a toll on their budgets.

Adding a touch of humor to the circumstances, some people shared photos of themselves wearing necklaces with pieces of onion on social media platforms. Apparently, treating the vegetable as a precious commodity has been their way of expressing sarcasm.
