Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman in a new look while visiting Saudi Arabia
Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, has gained some attention after posting a photo of herself on her Facebook page wearing a conservative dress and her hair covered.
“In Saudi Arabia. I was asked if we’d be observing the local dress code, I said of course,” Zakharova commented in the caption of the photo.
When asked by one Facebook user why she was dressed conservatively, Zakharova replied: “Because our (Russian) traditions accepts tolerance of the national characteristics and traditions of other peoples”.
Zakharova is part of the accompanying delegation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is on a visit to Saudi Arabia to discuss a number of regional issues and discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries.
Many visiting female delegates of visiting countries like Ivanka Trump, Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton have forgone wearing the hijab while visiting Saudi Arabia since it is not enforced.
