VIDEO: Outrage over Malaysian slapping woman for not wearing hijab

Published: Updated:

A video purportedly showing a Malaysian man slapping a woman at a bus stop in Penang for not wearing hijab has sparked outrage.

The video shows the man yelling at a group of women, some of whom are wearing hijab while some aren’t. He is seen pointing his finger at the ones who weren’t wearing the head scarf, and yelling at them.

Three minutes into the video, the man yells at one of them saying, ‘are you Muslim?’, to which she replied that she was but that the hijab was a personal choice, according to The Independent. He then proceeded to slap her.

Other women are seen rising to her defense, but the man remains around the bus stop’s vicinity, telling the women without hijab to go home, the newspaper added.

The video was viewed 700,000 times, and sparked outrage online, with people condemning his actions and even calling him a Nazi. Out of a population of 30 million, around 60 percent are Muslim in Malaysia.
