Pink auto-rickshaws run by women, and for women, have started a revolution of sorts in India.

The government has been compelled to launch this fleet of women-only auto-rickshaws in the wake of rising cases of sexual harassment in public transport.

They are based on the belief that women feel safe travelling in these three-wheelers. These mechanized rickshaws double as source of dignity and financial independence for women drivers. Majority of these women are either widows or separated.

Routine discouragement

Saraswati Sahoo, one of the auto-rickshaw drivers, said that male auto-rickshaw drivers routinely discourage me and fellow female drivers.

“I tell them that they should not have any issue because I am making a living by legitimate a mean. I am not taking a pie from their earning,” she said.

Kusumbar Choudhury, Project manager, National Urban Livelihood Mission, says the idea was that women start should take an initiative which can ensure safety and security of women commuters.

“We thought of introducing auto-rickshaws that would be run by females and the commuters would be only women”.
