UK foreign secretary says Chinese wife is Japanese during China visit

Published: Updated:

The new UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt sparked laughter at the start of his meeting on Monday with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi when he misidentified his Chinese-born wife as being Japanese.

“My wife is Japanese - my wife is Chinese – that’s a terrible mistake to make,” Hunt said in Beijing.

Hunt is on an official visit to China.

Wang said on Monday that his country remains committed to the “one country, two systems” governing framework in Hong Kong, despite growing concerns that Beijing is eroding the former British colony’s civil liberties.

During Hunt’s visit, China offered Britain talks on a post-Brexit free trade deal, reaching out to London as Beijing remains mired in an increasingly bitter trade war with Washington.
