A Dubai police officer has saved the mother of a 7-month-old baby from serving a 100-day jail term by paying off her AED 10,000 ($2,700) fine.
According to local newspaper Khaleej Times, Lieutenant Abdul Hadi Al Hammadi said he “couldn't bear the sight of the husband sobbing in front of him and couldn't come to terms with the thought that the woman may have to languish behind bars depriving the infant of mother's much-needed care.”
The woman had got stuck in a financial problem after signing a check on behalf of her husband's company, and couldn't pay the amount, according to the report.
"I was assigned by my seniors to help people and solve their problems. So when I saw the plight of the couple, I swung into action to ensure that the mother is not imprisoned and goes back home with her child and husband," the police official was quoted as saying.
According to the report, Hammadi had requested that his gesture be kept a secret and did not know how the media became aware of the situation until he was contacted by local press.
