Dubai court charges man with stealing diamond worth $20 mln

A Sri Lankan security officer stood trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance after being charged with stealing a diamond worth $20 million (73.5 million AED).

Public prosecution records stated that the perpetrator stole the gem from his workplace at a freezone company near the Dubai International Airport, then headed to his friend’s house.

The Khaleej Times reported that the accomplice was also charged with sheltering a fugitive. They also said that another accomplice who aided the perpetrator by smuggling the diamond out of the UAE via a shipping company under his name.

“On May 25, he went to his work wearing a winter coat and took the stone out of the safe and hid it under his coat. He later went to his friend's place in Hor Al Anz where they hid the stone in the latter's shoe. They then arranged to ship it with some clothes out of the UAE by express service,” the newspaper reported a sergeant as saying.

A manager at the workplace was the one who reported the diamond missing after doing an inventory of the items kept in the company safe.

Officers caught the perpetrator through surveillance camera footage.

The verdict is set to be announced in October.
