VIDEO: Yemeni referee fires bullets instead of a whistle to call football match

Published: Updated:

Yemeni users on social media have been circulating a video of a referee during a football match using a machine gun and firing bullets into the air instead of using a whistle to call the game.

The video, which has raised eyebrows, shows the referee carrying an AK-47 assault rifle while calling the football match in a village in the southeastern province of Shabwa. Each time a foul was made, he fired bullets in lieu of blowing a whistle.

At one point, the video shows the gun-wielding referee fire live bullets to call a foul while the rest of the football players on the field then went on playing as if nothing had happened.

Yemenis’ reactions to the video ranged from cynics to others, dismissing the incident they considered to be absurd and indiscriminate in the use of weapons.
