WATCH: Yemeni man dances to celebrate getting a gas tank from Houthis

Published: Updated:

A video shared by Yemenis on social media this week has shown the stark reality of life in Houthi militia-held areas.

What first appears to be a triumphant dance for a wedding, birthday or graduation, is actually a celebration of the Houthis giving a single gas cylinder – used to power a cooking stove – to a man living in Dhamar, southwestern Yemen.

The man is greeted by a group of his neighbors and their children, as they dance while one man plays a flute. This music is traditionally linked to big occasions.

The video and accompanying messages on social media suggest that the people of Dhamar are rarely provided with their basic humanitarian needs from the militia, and that a gas cylinder has become a thing of dreams.
