Turkey PM Erdogan’s car attacked

Published: Updated:

Video footage emerged on Friday of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s car being attacked by an angry mob, as the premier visited the town of Soma where a mining disaster killed over 300 people.

Around the same time, amateur footage showed him and his bodyguards retreating in a supermarket after crowds began shouting “murderer!” and “Thief!” – with some claiming the footage shows him punching a mourner.

Erdogan – who is expected to run for president in elections to be held later this year – also faces a fallout after Yusuf Yerkel, one of his advisors, was photographed kicking a protester in Soma.

After the disaster earlier this week, the premier declared three days of national mourning and postponed a trip to Albania to visit the mine, situated 250 kilometers south of Istanbul.
