Video shows Iraqi govt forces fleeing Mosul

Published: Updated:

Video footage has emerged showing Iraqi government troops fleeing Mosul after jihadist militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and local armed men took over Iraqi’s second largest city earlier this week.

As residents fled in their thousands to the more stable Kurdish-controlled northern part of the county, the surprise takeover by the militants came as a surprise for the international community, as well as Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s government.

In response, Maliki urged parliament to declare a state of emergency and back a “general mobilization” of troops, as well as announcing he would arm citizens to fight the militant groups.
