New York man dies from heart attack during police arrest

An obese man died of a heart attack Thursday in New York after he was tackled by police officers, cops and witnesses said.


Eric Garner, 43, is said to have suffered a heart attack while a struggle with several police officers who forced him down on to the sidewalk.


The 159kg man told police he couldn't breathe as he was forcibly detained on suspicion of selling untaxed cigarettes on Thursday, footage of the incident shows.


At a rally held in Garner’s honor on Saturday, National Action Network civil rights headquarters in Harlem, Rev. Al Sharpton’s, a civil rights leader, said that Garner’s death will test the New York Police Department’s relationship with the city’s sizeable black community.
