A Lebanese soldier who apparently deserted was shown in a video posted online this week seated beneath a flag of the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front.
In the video, Atef Saadeddine, who identified himself as “a soldier defecting from the [Army’s] Eighth Division,” appeared still in military fatigues.
Saadeddine said he was deserting because of army “bias” toward Lebanon’s Shiite Hezbollah organization, which has sent thousands of fighters into Syria to support President Bashar Assad’s troops.
