U.S. cops issue Christmas gifts instead of traffic tickets

Published: Updated:

Motorists in a Michigan city got a surprise this Christmas season when the local police department doled out gifts rather than fines.

On being pulled over for a minor traffic violation – such as tinted windows - drivers were asked by the police what gifts they were shopping for Christmas. A team listening in on a microphone then quickly purchased the presents, which were distributed to the stunned driver.

“While we don’t encourage minor traffic violations, it’s important for police departments to take the time to show their citizens how much they really care,” reads the text at the end of the video, released by the Lowell Police Department.

Since the video was posted on YouTube last week, it has since garnered over 2.5 million views.
