Putin welcomed in Egypt by off-key Russian anthem

Published: Updated:

While hailed by media outlets as a success, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Egypt last week appeared to have been marred by an off-key rendition of Russia’ national anthem.

The one-minute clip of the occasion - featuring a wincing Putin standing with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi - was broadcasted live on Egyptian television, and has since made its way to video-sharing site YouTube.

Just before the anthem ceremony took place, Putin had been given a 21-gun salute as he was driven through the grounds of the presidential palace in Cairo.
