A former member of Iraqi parliament has said he believes U.S. President Barack Obama was raised by a Shiite father and mother.

Speaking out in a televised interview on an Arabic satellite channel, Taha al-Lahibi implied Obama’s “Shiite background” was a reason behind the president being “more cooperative with Shiite Iranians.”

He also insinuated that the president’s middle name – Hussein – was more proof.

A clip of the outburst was posted to YouTube this week. It was met with the expected comments mocking the fiery ex-parliamentarian.

Allegations that Barack Obama practices Islam have been suggested since he campaigned for the U.S. Senate in 2004 and have proliferated since his election as president in 2008.

Though Obama is a practicing Christian and he was chiefly raised by his mother Ann Dunham and her Christian parents, his father Barack Obama, Sr., with whom he lived only as a baby, was allegedly a Muslim-turned-atheist.
