Obama urges tolerance in his final speech to the UN

Published: Updated:

US President Barack Obama told the UN General Assembly that nations cannot follow beliefs of ethnic superiority or use a desire to preserve identities to dehumanize or dominate another group.

Obama said he did not believe progress was possible if the desire to preserve identity gave way to "an impulse to dehumanize or dominate another group," adding that discrimination us erode the "fragile bonds of civilization."

Obama on Tuesday was delivering his final speech to the UN General Assembly.
