Presidential dance linked to YouTube shutdown in Tajikistan

Published: Updated:

Tajikistan has blocked YouTube in what appeared to be linked to a video showing the nation’s president dancing.

The video showed Tajik President Emomali Rahmon singing and dancing with guests at his son’s wedding in 2007, according to BBC Russia. The video was not published on the internet until May 18 of this year.

The government’s Communications Service ordered internet service providers to shut down YouTube without any official explanation, Indo Asian News Service reported, quoting Asomiddin Atoyev, head of the association of the country's internet service providers.

The four-minute-long video was first broadcast on a local television station that opposes the government.

It was the third time the country has blocked the social video sharing website since July last year. YouTube was blocked in Tajikistan for more than two months between July and October and again for two weeks from March to April.
