The German government hopes that the Saudi ambassador will return to Berlin soon, a government spokesman said on Wednesday.
The spokesman said that the Saudi kingdom is a major partner in the region and Germany is very keen to cooperate with.
He added that Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir invited his German counterpart Heiko Maas to visit Riyadh.
On Tuesday Saudi Arabia welcomed the statement of Maas which included his intention to work towards strengthening the bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation in all areas between the Kingdom and Germany.
Saudi Foreign called on his German counterpart to visit the Kingdom at the earliest opportunity to start a new phase of close cooperation at all levels to the benefit of both countries.
The German foreign minister said- during a press conference with his Saudi counterpart on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings in New York and which kicked off on Tuesday: “In recent months, our relations have seen a misunderstanding that is in sharp contrast to our strong and strategic relations with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and we sincerely regret this".
Heiko Maas added: “We should have been more clear in our contacts and dialogue in order to avoid misunderstandings between Germany and the Kingdom,” stressing that Saudi Arabia plays a vital and pivotal role in the region.
