Pentagon confirms one ballistic missile struck Al Udeid in Iran attack on US base

One of the ballistic missiles fired by Iran hit the largest US military base in the Middle East during last month’s attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the Pentagon told Al Arabiya English on Friday.

“One Iranian ballistic missile impacted Al Udeid Air Base June 23 while the remainder of the missiles were intercepted by US and Qatari air defense systems,” Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement.

He added that the impact did minimal damage to equipment and structures on the base. “There were no injuries. Al Udeid Air Base remains fully operational and capable of conducting its mission, alongside our Qatari partners, to provide security and stability in the region,” Parnell said.

Recent satellite imagery this week revealed damage to a radome at the base, which is typically used to store communications equipment and gear. Al Udeid serves as the forward headquarters of US Central Command (CENTCOM) in the region.

Following the Iranian retaliation for the US strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites on the night of June 21, Tehran lobbed a barrage of short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles at Al Udeid Air Base.

Shortly after the Iranian attack, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine said the US was “aware that something” got through the multi-layered air defense systems. But he praised the US troops that worked to thwart the attack, which he said was the “largest single Patriot engagement in US military history.”
