“The strikes are targeting Iranian military capabilities used to threaten vessels freely transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, an international waterway vital to global commerce,” the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a post on X.
CENTCOM said its forces were holding Iran accountable at the US president’s direction.
Later, CENTCOM said a US fighter jet shot at and disabled a vessel heading for Iran’s Kharg Island. The commercial vessel ignored multiple warnings as it tried to violate the US-imposed blockade, according to CENTCOM. “The ship is no longer transiting to Iran,” CENTCOM said in a statement.
