Russia says seized new village near strategic east Ukraine hub

Russia on Tuesday said its forces had captured a new village in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region near the strategic town of Kurakhove after months of steady advances.

The defense ministry said on the 1,000th day of Moscow’s offensive that its troops had “liberated the settlement of Novoselidovka,” whose Ukrainian name is Novoselydivka, north of the key hub of Kurakhove.

Moscow’s army is now rapidly advancing in the Donetsk region and closing in on the industrial town of Kurakhove, which had a pre-war population of around 10,000 people.

Russian troops now control territory to the north, east and south of Kurakhove, which lies on the shores of a reservoir.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday that he had visited the frontline city of Pokrovsk, near Kurakhove, which Russian troops are also aiming to capture.
